My maternal grandfather, Daniel O’Mara, was a police officer in the 10th precinct that summer. And reckoning with that personal history – and the broader social forces that led up to that violent summer – is something I will probably be doing for the rest of my life.
I’m also a reporter, editor, and Detroiter. And I feel very fortunate to be able to be a part of a project that takes a fresh look at the events of that summer 50 years ago, through the stories of the 43 people who lost their lives in the unrest.
I am the assistant news director at the NPR affiliate Michigan Radio, where I edit the work of several reporters. I’ve reported extensively on Detroit for Michigan Radio and national outlets including NPR and Marketplace.
