Joe Spencer - Executive Producer
Joe Spencer is a veteran Detroit television executive and respected member of the professional broadcasting community. Under Joe’s leadership as program director and general manager, America’s first black-owned TV station, WGPR, grew into a nationally known media organization and became a Detroit institution for two decades.
Joe has over 30 years of broadcasting experience. In 1972, he joined the WWJ news staff, becoming one of the first black producer/directors in the city of Detroit. In September 1975, WGPR-TV took to the airwaves and Joe joined the staff as executive producer. After almost 20 years with the station, in 1994, Joe was involved in the successful transition of WGPR’s audience development into WWJ-TV, owned and operated by CBS Network. As director of programming for the newly acquired CBS affiliate, Joe helped develop a totally new on-air philosophy for the station, while continuing to implement strategy, until leaving CBS in 2001.
