Impact of Detroit 1967 uprising to be explored July 23
WHEN: Saturday, July 23, 2016, 6 p.m. Eastern Time (49th anniversary of the uprising)
WHAT: A special web outtake from “Finding the Lost,” the central feature from a film trilogy to air on PBS TV in 2017
WHERE: Big City Films website http://www.summer67.bigcityfilms.com/
WHO: Detroit-based, Emmy Award-winning Big City Films will screen an exclusive preview clip from a documentary trilogy in production for next year’s 50th anniversary of the 1967 rebellion that left 43 dead and millions of dollars in property damage.
Juanita Harper, sibling of 20-year-old George Tolbert, who was killed by the National Guard during the uprising, will tell her story on film for the first time.
WHY: “Next year marks the 50th anniversary of an event that permanently scarred Detroit,” says Bruce Harper, director of Big City Films. “Given recent clashes between police and citizens around the country, we thought we’d offer an early look at the important dialogue we’ll promote this time next year on July 23, when the city first began to burn.”
Partners in “Summer ‘67” include Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion, UAW-Ford and PBS Channel 56.
